This view of Edinburgh’s Royal Academy was tricky to capture. I was struck by the lovely sideways light, but did not sufficiently appreciate how fleeting it was. On a winter day, there was a very short window in which the sun would get over the top of the Old Town ridge to hit the front of the building before moving too far to the side. I had to make three further trips, hoping the sun would emerge at all at the critical time, before I could complete the sketch.
